2014 HENRY LAWSON FESTIVAL, GRENFELL - Part Two

2014 Henry Lawson Festival @ Grenfell, part 2

The 2014 Henry Lawson Festival at Grenfell, N.S.W., Australia kicked off on the Friday before the Queen's Birthday Holiday weekend but didn't get into full swing until Saturday, 7th June. That was when I got amongst the action with my camera, the Procession down Main Street being the chief attraction. Here's how it looked to me:

As I walked up to Main Street for the procession, I captured this shot of the old type of coach that used to be the chief form of transport in N.S.W. out beyond the 'beaten track'. I could be wrong but I believe it's an original Cobb & Co. coach, except that they used to operate with more horses up front.

(All images on this blog are thumbnails, so please click on any or all of them to see a much larger version.)

Once I found a reasonable spot for taking photos, I settled in for the 'passing parade' to go by. Before it reached us in lower Main Street, I took this shot of the general scene. The clock tower is part of the former Commonwealth Bank building (now a private residence). Weddin Shire Council recently spent about $10,000 to get the clock going again, after it had stopped some years ago. It seems to keep good time, too!

The crowd waiting in anticipation

The first 'float' to come along was the one entered by the local IGA (Independent Grocers of Australia) Supermarket. I'd be surprised if they won their category......

IGA float

Following right behind the IGA entry was a couple of Go-karts, representing the Grenfell Kart Club. They kept stopping and starting, so that they could give a 'demo' of their terrific acceleration. I was impressed!

For reasons unknown to me, the Grenfell Town Band split the Go-karters from their club's float but that's what happens sometimes. In case you're wondering, the people wearing red are actually Cowra Band members.

Don't you love that moustache!?!

The Grenfell Kart Club is currently working towards hosting the N.S.W. Open Championships on the October long weekend (2014). Here's a link to their website.

More karts

There was a freestyle display on bikes and scooters by a group called Big Air School. I missed the display, though.

Big Air School

The theme for floats in this year's Henry Lawson Festival was 'Favourite Movies' and here's the first one.....

No prizes for guessing that it's The Wizard of Oz, with Tin Man's funnel just visible over Cowardly Lion's shoulder. Oh, and - appropriately - this was the Grenfell Lions Club's entry!

Then came Grenfell Public School's entry, which, judging by the graphic of the castle, was 'Sleeping Beauty'.

......and here's their wide-awake Sleeping Beauty.......

....... or she may be one of the Festival Queen Candidates. Not sure......

Next was Caragabal Public School's entry, Alice in Wonderland, which had lots of children in various costumes following on foot.

Here's Alice herself! ^

Not sure about this one. Any ideas?

More Caragabal kids - and adults.

I was a bit slow in catching onto this one. It's the tireless workers from the Community Health Centre, calling themselves the Hospital Hillbillies, aka The Beverly Hillbillies. I must be slipping...... (above and below)

This small group represented the Heart Foundation.

and here's a fun group representing the Grenfell Picnic Races.

Now for something completely different.....

I think it's a Cadillac but I could be wrong.

There are two groups here, Cowra Ballet School on the right and the chap carrying the owl on the far left represents the group called Feathered Friends, which was mentioned in part 1 of this saga.

I'm not sure what movie the Cowra Ballet School had as its theme.

The Cobb & Co coach-and-pair strutting their stuff.

The Grenfell Girl Guides chose 'Frozen' as their favourite movie.

The following 3 photos show pupils, etc. from St. Joseph's School in costume for their favourite movie, 'Legoland',
